The early summer months are a particularly busy time in the moving industry throughout the country due to school being out and families making their moves. We experience this huge uptick in business as our agency produces the most moves of any office in Mayflower’s network. So, to be able to assist a community in dire need of services with three days notice did not seem to be feasible nor would the resources even be available to us. The need you ask? Well over 100 pets were displaced from their families in southern Arizona due to the Monument Fires.
The Arizona Humane Society had set up a temporary shelter for these loveable critters but was in dire need of kennels, blankets and of course food. Dircks received a call from United Brokers Group, a Chandler based office of residential realtors that we are connected with, seeking our assistance. They had planned to rent a truck to transport what they collected. Bear in mind, that the area needing the goods was a good three hour drive, one-way, south of Phoenix. Well, we made some magic happen and carved out some time for one of our 24-foot bobtails to spring into action. On Thursday morning, June 23rd, our truck arrived early to United Brokers Group and was loaded with all kinds of pet accessories and food. Then we received two doses of great news. The pets of the Sierra Vista area were able to go home as the evacuation was lifted and the fire was better contained and secondly, the supplies were no longer needed for that area and were instead diverted to Arizona Humane Society’s Sunnyslope (north central Phoenix) location for future disaster relief. We all got a little taste of victory on this one. Dircks didn’t have to make the long round trip and the Arizona Humane Society’s volunteers and temporary shelter were able to retreat safely. But most importantly, pets and families were able to go to their homes and that’s what matters the most.
