The recent article that ran in the Arizona Republic about driver shortages was right on. While it didn’t mention anything about Household Goods drivers, we are experiencing many of the same issues as well as other problems recruiting new drivers. Our drivers not only have to pass all the Federal Regulations for safety and drug testing, but they need to follow more stringent rules from Mayflower. Every time they enter someone’s home, we have to be absolutely sure that our customers can be at ease in their own home when strangers show up to take everything they own, load it into a trailer, drive it cross country and delivery their belongs back into their new home in the same condition that we received them in.
Being a truck driver is hard work and has become a dying art as regulations and competitive pressures have driven much of the revenue out of the business.
I take my hat off for today’s over the road drivers that have to juggle higher costs, fewer hours to do their work and reduced revenue to still make a reasonable living while being away from their families nearly 300 days a year. They are true road warriors!
