The Territorial Cup rivalry

The Territorial Cup rivalry

During this time of year, all of us will be enjoying a wonderful meal and special time with our families.  And of course, we’ll all reflect on what we are thankful for and will share gratitude with those closest to us.

In Arizona (and certainly around other parts our great country), football plays a big part of the Thanksgiving weekend.  The Territorial Cup rivalry game pitting the University of Arizona Wildcats against the Arizona State Sun Devils is the oldest activeNCAA rivalry football game played in the United States, and each year the game brings out the true fans of each university.

For those of you not in Arizona around this time, you might not have a true appreciation of the impact that this game has for most Arizonans, which will kick off on Saturday, November 30 in Tempe, Arizona.  To put it mildly, the annual rivalry game here in the The Grand Canyon State is quite Grand, indeed.

On November 30, 1899, Arizona State University (then known as Tempe Normal School) beat Arizona 11-2 at Tucson’s Carillo Gardens Field in the very first meeting of the two schools. Since that day, the Arizona Wildcats have gone on to lead the series 47-38-1, a nine-game advantage in the annual slugfest that has since become known as “The Duel in the Desert”.

In a state such as Arizona, where students from Phoenix and Tucson and other parts of the state grow up knowing each other, allegiances are formed early on.  There’s not a lot of room to move:  you’re either a Sun Devil or a Wildcat, and you learn early on to lovingly-hate the other school.

The rivalry is taken very seriously here and at Dircks Moving & Logistics, a proud and official Sun Devil Athletics partner.  We get to witness it first hand when we haul the Sun Devil branded trailer full of the ASU football team’s equipment to all away games, including every-other-year visit to Tucson, which can sometimes be quite eventful.  But that’s for a different day and a different blog …

Currently, as a partner, we sponsor ASU first down plays during the game with a “Move the Chains” feature that runs on the video boards.  Two years ago, we produced a short and cute video playing to the great rivalry and this year we’re at it again.

So sit back and enjoy our newest entry that is just a very small dose of fun that is this great rivalry.  We think it’s quite…moving!  Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving to all Sun Devil and Wildcat fans!
