What to Take When Moving Overseas

Moving out of state is one thing, but moving overseas is a completely different challenge. It’s going to be a lot more expensive to move your things overseas, so you’ll want to make sure that you only take what you need. The following are a few tips on how to figure out what to take with you overseas:

  • Consider how long you’ll be gone – If you’re only moving overseas for a short period of time, then it will be much easier to figure out what to take with you. If this is the case, you can only take the essentials and leave behind things to be stored in a storage unit, or at a friend’s or family member’s home. However, if you’re moving permanently, you’ll want to take items of sentimental value along with you as well.
  • Sort through everything – Get rid of clothes you don’t wear or need and give away, sell or toss furniture (if you’re leaving permanently). Weigh the costs of moving items against the cost of buying them when you arrive overseas instead.
  • Know what you’re allowed to take – Check the restrictions imposed by the country you’re moving to. You may have to pay import fees and duty costs, which might affect what you decide to take. Some things won’t be allowed across the border as well, especially if they’re items that are considered potentially dangerous.
  • Know the climate – Knowing what the climate is like will make it easier to decide what types of clothes you should take with you.
