How to Avoid Moving Scams

You’ve heard the stories—movers losing clients’ precious items, holding their valuables ransom, etc. Scammers know how stressful moving is and take advantage of individuals looking for help. Here’s how to avoid the frauds.

Low Estimates

Beware of low-ball price quotes. The saying, “If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is,”  applies to moving estimates. In most cases, a moving company will give you a very low quote and then continuously raise the prices for services you have never even heard of. They will promise you to get the job done in a short amount of time over the phone. This is very common and makes it easy to detect the frauds.

Large Deposit

Do not trust moving companies that demand cash or a large deposit. Your valuables should be enough of a deposit, and paying with cash can harm you down the line. If you pay with cash, there is no way to dispute false charges with a credit card company. If there is no money trail, there is no way to hold the movers, who have your items, accountable.

Reputation and Brand

This is the best advice we can give. Do you research.

Check to see if the moving company is licensed and if they’ve won any wards. Take the time to read the testimonials on the company’s website. Speaking of websites, make sure the movers you hire have one. There is no reason a reliable moving company should not have a website. Verify their ratings with BBB certified movers.

Something as simple as an unbranded moving truck can be a big giveaway.
