Moving Out of State for College? Here Are 4 Tips

Leaving home is a big step to take, especially if you’re moving out of state for college. While some students will be driving home every weekend to do laundry and enjoy home-cooked meals, you’ll be experiencing a whole different level of independence. Because of this, it’s important that you pack everything you need. The following are a few packing tips that students should use when moving out of state to go to college:

Sort through your things

Go through all of your things at home and sort them by what you want to keep and what you no longer need. Anything you don’t need should be given away or tossed out. You don’t want to take any clothes with you that you’re not going to wear, after all. Don’t forget to consider the climate – if you’re moving somewhere that’s warm all year round, you’re not going to need a parka.

Keep space in mind

Even if your dorm room ends up being as big as your room at home, you’re probably going to have to live with a roommate. You don’t want your room to be cramped, so keep this in mind when choosing what to take with you.

Don’t take things you can buy there

Certain items, like school supplies and toiletries, can be bought wherever you’re going to college. Bringing them with you is just going to be a hassle, and buying there allows you to get out and learn your way around town as well.

Get used to moving

When you go to college, chances are you’re not going to stay in the same location for more than a couple semesters. Unless you live off-campus, you’re going to have to pack up and move at the end of the year (often while dealing with finals), and move in again next year. Make it easy on yourself by investing in sturdy moving boxes that you can store and re-use, and try not to accumulate stuff that you’re not going to want to pack up later.

These are just some of the tips you should follow if you’re moving out of state for college. To schedule a professional move, be sure to contact us at Dircks Moving & Logistics today.
