Trying to move everything you own can be tricky. While professional movers can haul your furniture into their trucks and you can easily pack books, clothes and other items into boxes, some items need more specialized attention, such as your plants. The following are a few tips for moving your plants:

• Re-pot any plants in clay pots into plastic pots that are the same size a few weeks before the move. Make sure you give them time to adjust to the transplant; otherwise, it’s better to keep them in the original container.
• Prune your plants a few weeks before the move to promote healthy growth and to make them a little less of a burden to move.
• Water your plants a few days before the move. Try not to water your plants during the move unless they begin looking really dry.
• Small plants can be packed in boxes. Make sure that they are placed so that they fit securely at the bottom of the box. Pack paper around the pots to ensure that they stay in place.
• Don’t put your plants in the trunk of your car. It will get too hot and they won’t get any sunlight, both of which can hurt your plants.
• Pack your plants in your car as close to when you’re going to leave as possible.
• Keep your car at a comfortable temperature when moving your plants. If it’s too cold, it can be hazardous to your plants.
• If your move is going to last more than three days, bring your plants inside where you are staying and make sure they get some light.
• When you arrive at your new location, place the plant in a spot similar to where it was before. If it thrived next to a south-facing window, try to put it next to a south-facing window at your new home.

These are just a few tips that will help you move your plants safely without harming them. Ultimately, plants prefer staying put.
